From Summer Games and VMI to Bedford and Stafford, the Enthusiasm Grows!

Event Highlights from the First Half of 2010
6/25/2010

More than 1200 Special Olympics athletes swam, bowled, lifted, ran, swung and served their way to success. They've danced on the floor of the Robins Center. Hundreds of medals have been awarded. Thousands of cheer sticks have been put to great use on the sidelines.  It’s official: the 2010 Special Olympics Virginia Summer Games have come to a close.

If you listen closely, though, we’re sure you can still hear the excitement from the more than 2,000 volunteers, 50 corporate partners and 2,002 “fans in the stands” who spent the weekend with us. Thanks for making this the most enthusiastic Summer Games in our 36-year history.

Thanks, too, for making these last few months some of our best yet.  From the 2010 Basketball Championships in Stafford in March to the 17th Annual Bedford Softball Touranment in May, there's no doubt about it; we have some of the most incredible athletes, volunteers, sponsors, families and fans.

Below are links to photo galleries and slideshows from just a few of our more recent competitions. We hope they bring back memories, or spur you to be part of something special.

  • 2010 Summer Games, June
    • Summer Games, our largest statewide competition, was nothing short of legendary thanks to the overwhelming support of more than 2,000 local volunteers and 2,000 fans who braved the summer heat to assist more than 1,200 Special Olympics Virginia athletes. Thanks for being part of something special.
  • 17th Annual Bedford Softball Tournament, May
    • 32 Special Olympics Virginia softball teams “continued the tradition” at this year’s Bedford Softball Tournament, sponsored by the Virginia Moose Association.
  • Little Feet Meets, April
    • Hundreds of “little feet” gathered at schools across Virginia to compete in Young Athletes activities with the help of middle and high school volunteers. Little Feet Meets took place in Richmond and Lynchburg and Roanoke.
  • 2010 Basketball Championships, March
    • It’s March Madness Special Olympics Virginia-style! Don’t miss moments of the annual Basketball Championships included the GEICO All-Star Friday Night basketball challenge, plus skills, half court and full court action.
  • VMI Games, March
    • The 8th Annual VMI Games, hosted by the Virginia Military Institute, featured 400 Special Olympics athletes going for gold in seven sports.  Thanks to the 300 VMI event volunteers for helping us “build leaders in all walks of life.”
