Did you know...
- More than one million children and adult athletes with intellectual disabilities have learned the joy of sports since the inception of Special Olympics in 1968.
- Special Olympics takes place in 25,000 communities in 53 states and territories in the United States. More than 150 countries have established Special Olympics programs.

When is the Special Olympics?

Interesting question. When most people think about Special Olympics they
are really only thinking about the Summer Games, one of the five state
competitions held each year. While it is our largest event, it is not our only
event. If you look at our local competition schedule there is probably
an event this weekend. In fact, SOVA hosted over 2,300 competitions for
the athletes last year!

Who competes in Special Olympics?

Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and competition
opportunities for children (age 8 and older) and adults with intellectual disabilities. While some of our athletes have a physical disability, the
program was established to provide for the needs of those with intellectual disabilities.

How are the donations used?
-
Funds raised for Special Olympics are utilized to organize and stage the
athletic competitions, as well as training for volunteers, coaches and
athletes. SOVA is very pleased that over 88% of the funds raised go directly
to the support of our mission while 9% goes to fund development and 3% to
general administration.

How can I get involved?

SOVA is always looking for more volunteers to assist in organizing
competitions, coaching athletes and assisting with fund raising events.
You can email our office and indicate what your interests are and we will
contact you about involvement.

How do you raise money?
-
SOVA utilizes many avenues to raise the funds necessary to provide a quality
program for the athletes. Citizens of Virginia may receive a phone call or
a letter soliciting funds. These programs are operated by paid professional
fund raisers to assist SOVA. In addition, businesses are call by a vendor
to solicit support.
Many people also become involved in our numerous fund raising events, such
as the Law Enforcement Torch Run (torchrunva.com), Plane Pull (planepull.com)
and the Polar Plunge (polarplunge.com). You can get additional information
about these events from their web sites.

How do I get off the calling list?

If you are receiving solicitation calls and wish to have them stopped, please
call or email our office with your request. We will need to have your full
name, address and telephone number that is being called to effectively halt
the calling. However, If you are a constant supporter, removal from our
telephone list may mean that we have no way to continue to communicate with
you and keep you informed of our achievements and events. If we remove you
from our telephone list perhaps we can place you on our mail list so that we
do not lose touch.

How do I get off the mailing list?

The real question is, do you want to receive no mail from SOVA or just less
mail? We can "tag" your file on our database and limit the number of mailing
that you get each year. Please email or call our office and provide your
name and address and we will limit the number of information pieces that you
receive.

Why do you send me so many mailings?
-
Most of our donors receive six mailings per year. While the mailing are asking
for donations, they are also educating our donors about the scope and depth
of our programs. We understand that our donors can not give each time they
receive a mailing, but we want to stay in contact and inform you of our
latest achievements.
